The 14 softball is hand painted with red leather dye and the field is lined with strawberry or cherry Jell-O powder marking the first and third baselines. The pitchers mound is a piece of carpet. The game is played with 11 players on the field five outfielders and four innings that last around 90 minutes. The Association hires four umpires per weekend to officiate the games. Two fields are set up with metal backstops balanced on milk crates after the first major snow. Snowshoe Softball is not an easy sport with wearing snowshoes and throwing a 14 softball. In icy conditions the ball skips across the field and in deep powder snow the ball sinks deep causing the outfielders to dig for it. Players easily trip and fall if they dont pick up their feet to runand it takes skill to chase a ball in the outfield in the ungroomed snow. Since 1980 the tournaments have been scheduled among three weekends in January to early February with six teams competing the first two weekends and top six teams competing in a championship weekend. Most players and spectators plan the weekend trip a year in advance to stay at the local Hills Resort if they dont have a local place to stay after a day of being silly in the snow. The teams compete for 1000 in championship winnings and the privilege of receiving abyein the next years tournament. First-place winners from each weekend also receive championship t-shirts. Until the mid 90s a small trailer was used as an announcing stand for the games using a loud speaker to announce the batters ball countscoreplayer stats and results for all the spectators. You can always count on Brick Harris Bud Adams Leland Hubenthol Pee Wee Little and Bud LeMeiux to keep the spectators entertained. Teams and players have participated from far away such as The Squirrels of Corvallis OR and Thundershoes of San Francisco CA. The 2016 tournament was the 47th year of Priest Lake Snowshoe Softball Tournament.
