43 Nordic Exhilaration Last winters snowfall provided some wonderful beauty and great snow conditions for Nordic enthusiasts and for all those who enjoy the winter season at Priest Lake. Over the years Nordic skiing has gained in popularity as more people find how easy it is and how great the benefits are from cross-country skiing. Its one of the best forms of low-impact aerobic exercise and can be enjoyed by young and old alike. With three groomed trails systems and several other easily-accessible areas Priest Lake offers a variety of opportunities for Nordic skiers and snowshoe enthusiasts of any experience level. The most popular trail systems are Hanna Flats Priest Lake Golf Course Coolin Mountain Rocky Point and Indian Creek State Park. They all have designated trails for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. The golf course track along with miles of forest roads is good for skate skiing. Other areas have endless backcountry possibilities. Indian Creek State Park offers a free ski day the first Saturday in January. Ski equipment and snow shoes are provided for newcomers with members of the Priest Lake Nordic Club giving introductory ski lessons. Grooming is performed by Hills ResortIndian Creek State Park employeesand volunteers from the Priest Lake Nordic Club. The golf courseHanna Flats and Indian Creek State Park are groomed on a regular basis. Rocky Point is groomed as conditions warrant. Funding for grooming comes from donations and the sale of the Idaho Park N Ski Pass which may be purchased at many area businesses. More information can be obtained by checking www.parksandrecreation.idaho.gov. Updated grooming reports are posted at the Priest Lake Chambers website www.priestlake.org. With so many trails and such breathtaking scenery there is nothing quite as peaceful and enjoyable as a ski or snowshoe trek through the forest with freshly fallen snow.
